Radios

A marine radio is an essential piece of equipment on any boat, whether you opt for a handheld VHF or a fixed radio. In emergency situations, relying solely on mobile phones can be risky as they may not always be in range or have a reliable signal. By contrast, marine radios operate on VHF channels that provide reliable communication over short to medium ranges, making them a valuable tool for boaters and sailors.

In addition to their reliability, marine radios offer several key benefits over cell phones. For example, emergency channels are monitored 24/7 by the Coastguard, and any emergency broadcast will be heard by other craft in the area. This means that if you run into trouble on the water, you can quickly and easily alert nearby vessels and receive assistance. Furthermore, unlike cell phones, marine radios allow you to communicate with many people at once, which can be invaluable in group situations or during emergencies.

If you plan to use your VHF radio for communication purposes, you will need to hold a VHF radio operator’s qualification. Fortunately, the Coastguard offers short courses for Marine VHF Radio Operators and can issue call signs to those who pass. By taking this training, you can ensure that you are using your radio safely and effectively, while complying with legal requirements. Whether you’re a recreational boater or a professional mariner, a marine radio is a crucial safety tool that can help you stay connected and stay safe on the water.
